Conor McGregor may not be part owner of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) — yet — but he is still making major business moves with the world’s pre-eminent mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion ahead of his much-anticipated return to the Octagon.
During today’s (Thurs., Sept. 20, 2018) UFC 229 press conference inside Radio City Music Hall in New York N.Y., (replay here), UFC president Dana White, alongside “Notorious,” announced that the Irishman’s Proper No. Twelve Irish Whiskey will be an official sponsor of the upcoming pay-per-view (PPV) event on Oct. 6, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Indeed, after announcing the launch of his creation, McGregor will now get major shine for his new venture, revealing that his whiskey will, in fact, have a spot on UFC 229’s canvas where he attempts to re-claim his Lightweight title from current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
That apparently won’t be the only thing on the canvas on fight night:
Conor McGregor saying that his whiskey “is on their canvas, just like Khabib’s blood will be,” after Dana confirmed Proper Twelve is an official UFC 229 sponsor, might be the greatest statement in press conference history.— Sage Kendall (@SAKtap24) September 20, 2018
Naturally, McGregor whipped out a couple of bottles of his product during the presser — which he snuck into the building — and even had a drink with White on stage. In a rather surprising move, “Notorious” poured a glass for Khabib and offered it to him to celebrate his birthday.
“The Eagle,” however, replied with a simple, “I don’t drink.”
McGregor was in true form for his first MMA-related presser in two years, but despite McGregor’s many attempts to get under Khabib’s skin, the 155-pound champion remained calm, cool and collected.
Just don’t expect “The Eagle” to be so forgiving come fight night.
